Reddit Tests Verified Profiles on its Platform

64 / 100 SEO Score

Reddit has launched a new experiment on its platform today – a limited alpha test of verified profiles. Updated profiles of a select few users will now display a gray checkmark, letting users know they are interacting with a real, verified individual or business.

This feature is specifically designed for moments where verification matters – such as an AMA session with an expert or celebrity, a news update from a journalist, or an official announcement from a brand.

Testing Begins with a Small, Curated Group

Reddit has selected a small, curated group to launch the feature. This includes individuals who have already revealed their identity on the platform, as well as some businesses that have been given an “official badge.”

Reddit has clarified that anonymity remains a core principle of the platform. Verification is entirely voluntary, opt-in, and not status-oriented.
The main objectives are:

  • To provide clarity to users
  • To reduce the manual verification workload for moderators
  • To introduce a consistent identity verification method

Even after verification, accounts must still adhere to community rules and Reddit policies.

How will Verification Work?

In the initial phase, Reddit has selected a few public figures and trusted partners.
To receive verification, they must:

Opt-in

Have an account in good standing

Be actively contributing to the platform

Currently, users cannot request verification.
Reddit will share more details if the program expands.

What will Individuals Receive?

A gray checkmark on their profile, comments, communities, feed, post pages, and search results

Access to Reddit Pro, with a shortcut appearing on their profile

What will Businesses Receive?

The old “official” watermark will be replaced with a gray verified checkmark.

Business profiles will test flair, such as AMAs, announcements, or branded posts, making them easily identifiable.

This feature will help Redditors quickly locate trustworthy information.

Future Eligibility and Reddit’s Vision

Reddit has stated that eligibility criteria may evolve as the program grows, but the core principles will remain the same:

  • Participation must be voluntary.
  • User privacy must be protected.
  • The purpose of verification is clarity and community support.

Reddit aims for this feature to increase transparency on the platform without compromising anonymity.
